Still My Mom

I know the weight a step-parent bears,
Unsure of the love, unsure who cares.
Do they see me, or just my role?
Do I fill their hearts, or only a hole?

But if you knew what you mean to me,
You’d see it’s love, as pure as can be.
Not bound by blood, but something more,
A bond that time and trust restore.

We’re a family, no matter the name,
Built on love, not on blood’s acclaim.
Years together, through joy and strife,
You’re more than my dad’s beloved wife.

I’ve known you now for most my days,
Your steady heart, your constant ways.
Though my father’s gone, you’re still my guide,
A comfort that won’t be cast aside.

So when you lay your head tonight,
Know you’ve done your role just right.
You’re my Mom, in heart and soul,
This love we share has made me whole.

Dedicated to my Mom, Renee Steinpreis
