Hey everyone,
Retirement is only 761 days away, and let me tell you, it’s starting to feel real. This week, I decided to take some concrete steps to ensure I’m ready—financially, mentally, emotionally, and physically—for the life I’ve been dreaming about. Here’s what I tackled and how it felt to take action:
Financial Planning: Facing the Numbers
I sat down and reviewed my retirement accounts, looking at where I am now and where I need to be. At first, it was a little overwhelming, but seeing my savings on track (mostly!) was a huge relief. I even met with Steve my financial planner who helped me identify a few adjustments I can make to maximize my investments.
Janice also discussed healthcare coverage for all the traveling I plan to do with her agent and we will be all set there. Knowing that I’ll have solid coverage wherever I go—whether it’s hiking in Oregon or skiing in Colorado—gave me peace of mind.
Visualizing My New Life
I spent some quiet moments each day imagining what a perfect day in retirement looks like. For me, it’s waking up early, hitting a trail in the Red River Gorge here in Kentucky and even Pacific Northwest, or taking a leisurely drive through Maine during autumn. That visualization helped me realize that retirement isn’t just about stopping work—it’s about starting a new chapter.
Building Physical Strength for Adventure
This week, I committed to my fitness. I went on a brisk walk, focused on leg-strengthening exercises, and even signed up for a local outdoor club. As I pushed through a few steep inclines, I kept thinking about the adventures ahead. Each step felt like I was investing in my future self.
Adventure Planning: The Fun Part
I started researching destinations, and wow—there’s so much to look forward to! I found some incredible hiking trails in Oregon and started mapping a road trip to Alaska. I even made a preliminary gear list for all the adventures I’ll be having.
How It Feels to Be Preparing
Taking these steps made the countdown to retirement feel less daunting and more exciting. Instead of focusing on the “what-ifs” or the unknowns, I’m leaning into the opportunities and adventures ahead. 761 days suddenly feels like no time at all. In fact, it doesn’t feel like enough time to get everything done.
If you’re nearing retirement like I am, my advice is to start now. Whether it’s reviewing your finances, building your strength, or dreaming about what’s next, every little step adds up. I’m looking forward to the freedom, the energy, and the adventures waiting for me—and I can’t wait to share this journey with you.
Here’s to preparing for the next great adventure!
